Dogs have worked alongside man for centurys and continue to give loyal and willing service in the fields, on the racetracks, in the security services and in helping the disabled. Everyone in the UK will be aware of the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity, perhaps fewer know of the equally praiseworthy Hearing Dogs project and there are many more schemes where dogs serve man. However, we are more concerned in this section of the site with dogs as domestic pets although I should perhaps quote Lord Tebbit saying that they really "shouldn't be called 'pets', they are rightfully 'companions'."
Every child should have a dog as companion and protector while growing up because I believe it teaches commitment and responsibility However; for those of us in our later years the rewards are even greater. Older people who have a dog live longer, and if that sounds like hype, just ask your GP! Moderator Stan's Suzi I do appreciate that some people have restrictions placed on the keeping of pets by councils and housing associations. At a time when dogs are being allowed into many hospitals and nursing homes as therapy treatment for older people, this is inexcusable and I think there could be a case to put before the courts under the Human Rights Acts.
