Gardeners Pledge to Green
Up & fight

TV gardener Charlie Dimmock urges gardeners
to tackle climate change in our back gardens...
Our impact on the environment is already showing warns TV gardener
Charlie Dimmock. But according to the green-fingered goddess gardeners
are in the perfect position to respond to the challenge in our
own back gardens.
Those green fingered amongst us who are a little bit more in
touch with nature than the rest of us are already seeing the signs
of environmental change in their garden. 7 out of 10 gardeners
polled say plants are blooming much earlier than expected this
year, over half have had to cut their grass sooner or later than
previous years and 43% claim they are now having to mow their
lawns more frequently.
All
of these figures researched by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action
Programme) for Compost Awareness Week are up on previous years
suggesting current environmental concerns will actually affect
our generation rather than the next. With this in mind, before
you put the kids out to play this summer or before you fire up
the barbeque it's worth knowing there's some simple steps you
can take to "green up" your act.
Gardeners are already doing their bit with 76% now recycling
as much of their garden waste as possible through their local
council or recycling centre, which is far better than it ending
up at a landfill. The percentage of gardeners choosing to home
compost has increased from 34% to 53% this year and 41% of gardeners
now buy peat-free composts containing recycled materials - but
it's not just the green fingered among us that can join in.
