Universal Classics & Jazz has reacted to an unprecedented demand
for the hits of Dame Julie Andrews with a brand new collection, Julie
Andrews At Her Very Best, released on August 21st. The collection
was assembled with astounding speed to meet the demand created by
Saturday night BBC hit TV show, 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?'.
The show, backed by legendary musical impresario Sir Andrew Lloyd
Webber, searches for a new Maria Von Trapp for the forthcoming West
End production of The Sound of Music, a role famously played in the
original 1965 film by Julie Andrews.
For the last few years, theatres up and down the country have regularly
been packed out with excited wimple-wearing Julie Andrews fans for
Sing-Along-a-Sound-of-Music. They congregate to sing the hits from
this musical, whose magic lies in Andrews' stunning voice and engaging
on-screen presence. This cult following has now reached mainstream
status thanks to the BBC show.
In recent weeks, the Saturday night prime-time show 'How Do You Solve
a Problem Like Maria?' has brought Andrews' popularity to another
level as the nation votes for the contestant with the voice and magnetism
that most closely rival Andrews'. The programme, which began on 29th
July, will drive Andrews-mania even further throughout the rest of
its seven-week run before the grand finale on 16th September when
the British public will decide which of the ten hopefuls will take
the lead part in the West End show to open later this year.
The original film is one of the best-loved films of all time and
also one of the pinnacles of Julie Andrews' long and distinguished
film and stage career. Of all her roles, this is the one for which
she is best-remembered. Conversely, the film achieved popularity as
a result of her stunning performance and demonstrates why she has
clocked up such an impressive list of awards throughout her career.
This latest two-disc collection from Universal Classics and Jazz,
Julie Andrews At Her Very Best, is the ultimate collection of film
and broadway favourites from Dame Julie Andrews. As well as featuring
songs from the Sound of Music, the album also includes songs from
The King and I, My Fair Lady, Camelot and many more. These are some
of the best-loved songs in the world of musicals, and what they all
share is that they all achieved their popular status thanks to phenomenal
performances by Julie Andrews.
