Brook Benton
New low price collection from smooth lounge legend Released 4th April 2005 on Spectrum (catalogue no: 9826471)
Brook Bentons silky smooth tones were a huge feature of the early 60s when lounge vocalists took hold of the mainstream. This new low price collection brings together eighteen outstanding tracks, including two terrific duets with Dinah Washington: Baby (You've Got What It Takes) and A Rockin' Good Way (both Top Ten hits in the US), as well as remarkable solo recordings such as For My Baby, Shadrack, Still Waters Run Deep, and Going Going Gone. Born in 1931 in South Carolina, Benton learned to sing with a local gospel group. By the time he was 17, he had moved to New York and drove trucks by the day whilst singing with gospel groups such as Bill Langfords Spiritual Singers at night. Benton wrote and recorded for key artists such as Nat King Cole and Roy Hamilton, but his break as a vocalist came when he paired with writer/producer Clyde Otis. Together they created a unique R&B sound by setting Bentons rich intimate baritone against lush string arrangements. In the course of his career Benton enjoyed seven number one R&B hits and eight Top Tens in the US. Track list:
