ASTRUD GILBERTO

THE VERY BEST OF

Release Date - 21st August 2006

This Astrud Gilberto collection draws on some of the most beautiful music ever recorded - just think of the sun-kissed beaches of Brazil with the sultry sounds of Bossa Nova and Samba of the 1960's - when men looked sharp in black suits & ties, the women always wore Chanel dresses and international airports were the place to be seen.

Born in Bahia, Brazil, Astrud Gilberto's laid-back honey-toned vocals were born from a chance recording in 1963. Her then husband Joáo Gilberto was recording an album with Antonio Carlos Jobim and the American Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, in New York for the Verve Record label. The recording came to a point were they needed someone to sing in English but with a Portuguese accent. Joáo introduced his wife Astrud, who had not sung professionally before or indeed had any formal training. The finished result was a masterpiece. On the release of the album Getz/Gilberto, Astrud was never credited as the third artist on the front sleeve, but by the following year, The Girl From Ipanema was being played across America and the rest of the world. It became Brazil's biggest ever international hit. Astrud Gilberto and the Bossa Nova sound ("new wave") were here to stay.
